book review 2

John Davies – Cross Currents.

I have chosen to review this book because I believe that it links closely to my subject of trees in landscapes. The book is opened with an essay called Transitions by Ian Walker. I believe that the essay is about the photographs in the book and contains quotes from different books and people including Raymond Williams, The Country and the City, Hogarth Press, 1985, p. 239 and The Independent, 20 June 1992, p.1.

The book no longer has any more text apart from the names and places of the photographs. One photograph that caught my eye is SITR OF GROESFAEN COLLIERY, DERI Mid Glamorgan, 1984. This photograph shows trees in a natural landscape brilliantly because of the hills and mountains that are covered in trees. I believe that this photograph has even given me inspiration for my own work. I love how the photograph is in black and white because it really shows the definition of the light areas and the shadowed areas also it adds more definition to the clouds in the sky especially the plane line which I think gives the photograph a brilliant focal point. Unfortunately this copy is extremely small because it is the only copy I can find on the internet.

peppers

This is an improvised studio where I used natural light to create form. I have done this because I didn't have enough form photographs for my sketchbook and portfolio. some of these photographs show great form and some just show the peppers and unusual angles that I think has made the peppers look unnatural in a way.

I like this photograph above because it is very strange looking and makes the pepper look more like a pumpkin than a pepper. I also like how the stork of the pepper because it looks kind of strange and surreal.

I like this photograph so much that I have decided to use it in my sketchbook and my portfolio. I have chossen it because I think that it shows great form from a unusual angle.

book review.

This is my book review for the book Photographs of the Southwest by Ansel Adams.Ansel Adams: Photographs Of The Southwest
This is my book review on the book “Photographs of the Southwest”. All of the photographs in this book are taken by the photographer Ansel Adams. At the start of the book there is an essay on the land by Lawrence Clark. And after that there are just reams and reams of Adams’ photographs. All of these photographs are based on landscapes because that is the type of photographer Adams is.

After reading this book, I have now got many ideas for my own personal project, landscapes, and I have found this book to be very helpful with understanding composition and producing beautiful pictures of landscapes from unusual angles.

One photograph I have found to be extremely inspiring would be, image number 34, Aspen grove, North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, c. 1942. I found this picture to be most useful because it relates well to my own topic and it gives me a good angle to work from in my own work. I also like the way the photograph was taken/printed in black and white because it make the trees standout and gives the photograph a focal point.

Overall I really enjoyed this book because it has shown me how to take brilliant and eye-catching photographs of woods and landscapes.

Unfortunatly, I am unable to find the photograph that has inspired me.

2nd studio shoot

This is my second session in the studio, these didn't go so well as the other ones but I thought I would put them on anyway.

This photograph was taken when the flash had gone because I held my finger on the shutter for too long. Even though this was done by accident I think that it gives a great effect and I really like how it turned out.

I like the way the shadow has formed on this picture above and I think that I could possibly make the photograph black and white so that the shadow is more pronounced.

1st studio shoot.

This is my first studio session shots using wood shavings.

I really like this photograph because it gets up close and personal to the texture of the wood shavings.

I like this photograph because it shows great texture from an unusual and fun prospective.

This is my favourite photograph because it is simplistic looking and I think that it is the best photograph of all of this studio shoot.
